Unit 1 Summative: Part 3 - Artists

A Wheatfield with Cyprusses, 1889
Fishing Boats at Sainte Maries-de-la-Mer, 1888
Autumn Foliage, 1916
The Canoe

The two artists I choose were Tom Thomson and Vincent Van Gough. Thomson’s paintings are titled “Autumn Foliage 1916”, and “The Canoe”. Van Gough’s paintings are tilted “A Wheat Field With Cypresses, 1889” and “Fishing Boats at Sainte Maries-de-la Mer, 1888”. I choose both these artists because their techniques are stylized or impressionistic rather than realistic. They evoke images and ideas by using bold colour rather than making exact replicas. These painting had water or autumn colours similar to the subjects in my photograph. I felt that I could have a better chance of achieving these techniques than I would have in trying to replicate the exact images in the photos. I used a simple palate of colours and by blending mainly primary colours and using texture I tried to achieve similar effects as the chosen landscapes. I think that my sky is somewhat similar to Van Gough’s sky in Fishing Boats at Sainte Maries-de-la Mer. My trees were similar to those in Thomson’s Autumn Foliage.
